The Spiritual Catalyst: Justice in Tarot!

There are moments in life – lots in fact!! – when the universe quietly asks you to stop, breathe, and check out the whole picture, not just the parts you've rushed through or already filed away.   If you've felt that pull lately, an insistent tug in your mind, body and spirit to slow down and take stock of your life, there’s a reason!

Right now, during Libra season with its ruler Venus in retrograde (Oct. 3 - Nov. 13), the Tarot card of Justice is speaking loudly.  Here’s a little insight to help you tune in…

Embracing Justice: The Card of Truth, Harmony, Karmic Influence and Soulful Equilibrium

In the Major Arcana, Justice invokes the Master Number 11 (although some traditional decks use the 8).  She’s usually stoic and steady, holding a sword in one hand and a set of scales in the other.  She can appear soft, reassuring and relaxed one moment, but on second glance it’s clear she means business!  To help decide what your attention is being called to during the next month-plus, let’s examine her symbols:

The scales – represent balance, fairness, and the weighing of choices and consequences.

The sword –  represents clarity, truth, and the courage to cut through illusion.

Her steady gaze – reminds us that she sees everything, not to punish, but to reveal.

Like all of the Major Arcana, Justice is a teacher inviting us to lean in.  She’s not a harsh judge who dismissively hands down edicts.  Instead, she’s a mirror to our relationship patterns and deeply held beliefs about selfhood alongside the proverbial “other” in families, romance, career paths, etc.  She asks the questions that busy lives or deep desires can make us avoid:  Where am I out of alignment? What have I been giving, and what have I been receiving? Am I living in harmony with my truth?

When Justice appears in a reading, she often signals a time of accountability, clarity, and rebalancing. It may be a relationship that needs an honest conversation, a career decision that requires integrity and courage, or an inner imbalance between what you say you value (Venus) and how you actually live.

The beautiful thing about Justice, and why this archetype is so important now, is that she doesn't only collect debts or call for a reckoning – she also delivers rewards for truths spoken, aligned actions taken, and comfort in chosen paths versus simply adapting to what life brings.

Justice & Venus Retrograde:  Karma Is Not Punishment, It's a Return to Truest Self

Many of us hear the word “karma” and immediately relate it to payback for misdeeds or even inadvertent bad choices.  We act like it’s a cosmic scorecard waiting to catch us (or others who’ve wronged us – especially them- LOL!) making mistakes. But at its heart, karma is simply the universal law of cause and effect, and it works in both directions.  It’s impartial and not hung up on good or bad, but it’s unequivocal in bringing both to light to be addressed.  In other words, Justice highlights:

- The kindness you offered when no one was watching? (It returns)

- The boundaries you finally dared to set? (They build self confidence)

- The healing work you've done in silence, in the dark, on the hard days? (It’s being recorded, honored, and rewarded in ways seen and felt)

Justice reminds us that nothing is wasted. Every effort, every act of integrity, every moment you chose growth over conformity or comfort is part of the scales, and the scales are tipping in your favor more often than you realize.

Justice and Venus: The Astrological Connection

In Tarot, Justice is traditionally linked to Libra, the zodiac sign of balance, partnership, harmony, and fairness. And Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, values, and self-worth.  This connection serves as a practical and mystical reminder that justice and beauty are intimately related. True balance isn't cold or rigid. It is graceful. It is connected and relational. It is firmly rooted in how much we value ourselves and others.

Venus teaches us:

- What we love & and what we tolerate for the sake of love

- What we value and the price (psychological/spiritual) that we're willing to pay for it

- How worthy we believe we are of receiving love, abundance, and respect

When Justice and Venus work together, the message is clear:  Harmony in your outer world begins with recognizing and honoring your inner worth. You cannot balance the scales in your relationships if you've been placing yourself on the lighter side of the scale or worse, pretending that’s where you belong to keep the peace or status quo.

Venus Retrograde: The Great Review of the Heart

Venus is retrograde from October 3 through November 14, a stretch of roughly six weeks when the planet of love, beauty, and values appears to move backward in the sky. This happens about every 18 months, and it invites a deep, thoughtful review of our relationships, finances, creativity, and self-esteem.  Think of this window not as a period of delay or disruption, but as a sacred pause, a cosmic invitation to look back so you can move forward with an expectant wisdom. We are only days into it, which means the entire season of reflection is still ahead of you. Nothing has been missed. You are exactly at the doorway.

Venus retrograde often brings:

- Past loves and old connections resurfacing for closure or reevaluation

- Questions about self-worth that demand honest answers

- A reassessment of values, including money, time, and energy

- Creative and aesthetic/artistic rethinking, asking what truly feels beautiful to you now

When this retrograde energy meets the card of Justice, the message many of us are getting is that it’s time to reflect, rebalance, reassert and relaunch our relationships in whatever form they take.

Harmonizing Your Relationships: Romance, Career, and Spirit

Justice and Venus together offer an opportunity to bring more balance to many facets of life:

In Romance

Ask yourself:  Is the give-and-take in my relationship (or in my own approach to love) truly balanced? Are you over-giving to earn love, or withholding to protect your heart? Venus retrograde invites you to remember that you deserve a love that mirrors your own worth.  If you're single, this is a time to rebuild your relationship with yourself first. If you're partnered, it's a chance for honest, compassionate conversation if you’re doing the heavy lifting.

In Career

Where have you undervalued your gifts? Where have you stayed in alignment with your integrity, and where have you compromised it? Justice rewards fairness and truth. This is an ideal time to review contracts, negotiate your worth (raises, recognition, a clear path forward), or simply acknowledge how far your skills and dedication have carried you.

In Spirit

Don’t be surprised if you recognize during this period that the most overlooked relationship of all is the one with your higher self and spirit guides.  Venus governs not only love in principle, but receptivity, the ability to receive.  Retrograde energy softens the veil and turns our attention inward. When we quiet the noise and balance our inner scales, guidance flows more clearly. Your guides are not distant; they are waiting for you to make space to listen.

Your Six-Week Journey: Using the Retrograde Window

Because Venus retrograde runs from October 3 to November 14, you have time to move through this process unrushed and with intention. Here is one way to flow with it:

Early Weeks (October): Begin the review. Notice what resurfaces: old feelings, familiar patterns, people from the past. Don't rush to fix anything. Simply witness it with compassion.

Middle Weeks (late October to early November): Weigh the Scales – This is the heart of the work. Reflect on your successes, the challenges you've met, and the lessons that shaped you. Where are you out of balance? Where are you thriving?

Closing Weeks (November): Realign and Release – As Venus prepares to turn direct on November 14, begin choosing what you'll carry forward. Release what no longer reflects your worth, and commit to one or two aligned changes.

A gentle reminder: Avoid making major, irreversible decisions in love, finances, or appearance during a retrograde. Use this time to reflect and refine, then act with confidence once Venus moves forward again.

A Tarot Practice for This Retrograde

Tarot is a beautiful tool for exactly this kind of inner work, not as fortune-telling, but as a mirror for your own wisdom.  In fact, studies have shown that people are using tarot increasingly as a practical, reflective tool for self-growth rather than woo-woo predictions. Here's a simple practice to return to throughout the retrograde:

1. Pull the Justice card (or simply hold her image in your mind) and take three slow breaths.

2. Journal on these prompts:

- What successes am I most proud of since the last Venus retrogrades? (July 22 - Sept. 3, 2023; Oct. 5-Nov. 16, 2018)

- What challenges did I meet, and how did they shape me?

- What powerful lessons have I learned about love, worth, and boundaries?

- Where do I feel out of balance, and what is one small step toward harmony?

3. This 3-Card Pull might help!

- Card One: What I've released or healed

- Card Two: What I'm being asked to balance now

- Card Three: The reward or growth waiting ahead

4. Close (all readings!) with gratitude. Thank yourself for showing up. Thank the lessons, even the hard ones.

You Are Further Along Than You Think

Here is what I want to emphasize most at this time:  you are not behind some metaphysical 8-ball!  As long as you have breath, you have opportunity.  The pause you're feeling, the questions rising to the surface, the longing for something more honest and more beautiful: these are signs of a soul in the middle of becoming.

Justice does not ask you to be perfect, she asks you to be truthful even (or especially) when its difficult. Venus does not ask you to earn your worth. She wants you to remember that you already hold it.  So take this retrograde as the gift it is. Look back with compassion.  Honor how far you've come. Trust that the scales are balancing, and that what you've sown in love, effort, and integrity is on its way back to you.

By the time Venus turns direct on November 14, you won't be the same person who walked into this season. You'll be clearer, steadier, and more deeply rooted in your own worth. The future is not something to fear. It's something you are co-creating and shaping, one honest, worthy, beautifully aligned choice at a time.

You are ready. The scales are in your hands.

With love and light,

Afefe
